Last-Minute Dog Boarding — We'll Make Room

Sometimes things happen fast. A family emergency, an unexpected work trip, a funeral out of state, a last-minute Auburn game road trip — life doesn't always give you a week to plan dog boarding. At Kiesel Bark Pet Resort in Auburn, we do our best to accommodate last-minute boarding requests when space is available. Call us first — don't spend an hour searching online when a two-minute phone call can get you an answer right now.

Last-Minute Dog Boarding in Auburn, AL

We get last-minute calls pretty regularly. Auburn is a busy place — a college town with game weekends, a military community with sudden deployments, a university city where travel happens fast. We understand that not every boarding stay gets planned two weeks out, and we don't make people feel bad for calling on short notice.

What we can't do is guarantee availability on zero notice, especially on Auburn home football weekends, major holidays, or during peak travel times. Those slots fill up fast and they don't come back. But on regular weekdays and non-peak weekends, there's a decent chance we can fit you in — you just have to call and ask.

The best thing you can do if you think there's even a chance you'll need boarding is call early. Even if your plans aren't confirmed yet, we can sometimes hold a tentative spot while you figure things out. That's a lot better than calling at 7am the morning you need to leave and finding nothing available.

When Auburn Pet Parents Need Last-Minute Boarding

Over 11 years, we've heard just about every reason for a last-minute booking. Most of them are completely understandable — life doesn't run on a boarding reservation schedule.

Family emergencies

A sick parent, a death in the family, an unexpected hospital stay — these situations don't give you time to plan. We do our best to help Auburn families get out the door when something urgent comes up.

Sudden work travel

Auburn University faculty, medical professionals, and business travelers sometimes get sent somewhere with very little notice. We've helped plenty of Auburn professionals get their dog sorted out before a same-day or next-day departure.

Military deployment or orders

Auburn and Opelika have a strong military community. Orders don't always come with much lead time. We've worked with military families on short-notice boarding and long-term stays when service members are called away.

Game weekend plans that changed

Auburn football can turn a casual Saturday into a two-day trip in a hurry. If you're suddenly heading to an away game or your tailgate plans expanded, give us a call — we'll see what we can do.

Home repairs or fumigation

Sometimes your dog can't be home. Pest control, major repairs, flooding — we've heard it all. A short, last-minute stay to get your dog out of the house while work gets done is something we help with when we have space.

Original plans fell through

A friend or family member who was going to watch your dog backed out. Your dog-sitter cancelled. It happens. Call us and we'll see what we can do.

Flexible Drop Off and Pick Up

For last-minute situations, timing flexibility matters. Here's what our schedule looks like:

  • Monday – Friday drop-off and pickup: 7am – 6pm
  • Saturday drop-off and pickup: 7am – 12pm
  • Sunday pickup: 8–8:30am and 4–5pm
  • Early morning drop-offs welcomed — 7am is available Monday through Friday
  • Call ahead so we're ready when you arrive — don't just show up and hope for the best

Holiday and game weekend warning: Last-minute boarding around Auburn home football games, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and spring break is genuinely hard to come by. These are the times we're most likely to be full. If you're in one of those windows, call as early as possible — even the morning of — because cancellations do happen and something might open up. But don't count on it. For these dates, booking early is always the better call.

What to Bring for a Last-Minute Boarding Drop-Off

When you're rushing out the door, it's easy to forget things. Here's the short version of what your dog needs for a boarding stay:

  • Proof of current vaccinations — Rabies, Bordetella, and DHPP must be up to date for all boarding dogs
  • Your dog's food, clearly labeled — sudden diet changes stress a dog's stomach, especially in an already stressful situation
  • Any medications, labeled with name, dosage, and schedule ($1 per dose to administer)
  • Your contact number and an emergency contact in the Auburn area if possible
  • Your vet's name and phone number
  • A familiar item from home if you have time — a blanket or toy can help a dog settle faster

Vaccinations are the one thing we can't make exceptions on. If your dog's records aren't current, we can't board them — it protects every dog in our facility. If you're not sure whether your dog is current, a quick call to your vet before you call us can save you a wasted trip.

How to Maximize Your Chances of Getting a Last-Minute Spot

A few things that help when you're calling on short notice:

  • Call, don't just book online. The phone line gets answered during business hours and we can tell you immediately whether we have space. Online booking may not reflect real-time availability as quickly.
  • Be flexible on dates if you can. If you need Thursday through Sunday but we're tight on Thursday, dropping off Friday might free things up. We'll tell you what we have.
  • Have your vaccination records ready. If you can email or text us your dog's current vaccination record before you arrive, the check-in goes faster and there are no surprises at the door.
  • Be upfront about your dog's needs. Anxious dog? Dog that doesn't like other dogs? On multiple medications? Tell us on the call. We can prepare better and confirm faster whether we can accommodate your situation.

Why Having a Regular Boarding Facility Matters

The Auburn families who get last-minute spots most reliably are the ones who are already regulars. When we know your dog, know your contact info, and have your vaccination records on file, a last-minute booking takes about two minutes. When it's your first time calling and we have to collect all that information plus assess whether we have the right space for your dog, it takes longer — and if we're nearly full, that extra time can mean the difference between getting in and not.

If you've never boarded with us before, we'd love to meet you and your dog before an emergency forces the introduction. A planned short stay — even just one night — gets everything set up so that when something urgent comes up, you already have a place to call. The ASPCA recommends establishing a relationship with a boarding facility before you actually need one for exactly this reason — and we'd agree with that completely.
